Stakeholders call for repositioning college games

Key players in the university system, including a professor from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Clement Fasan, spoke of the need for Nigeria to reposition university sports and games for national development.

Fasan, professor of physical activity, sports and health education and former dean of the Faculty of Education, who said the time to do so could not be other than now, however noted that the repositioning would make sports activities including the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) in academic institutions across the country has a great national and global impact.

He declared this position during the NUGA Scientific Conference held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, organized for the 26th edition of UNILAG-NUGA 2022, held at the university.

In his keynote address at the event, Fasan, the guest speaker, whose article dwelt on: “Repositioning Institutional Sports for Great National and Global Impact”, insisted that he was high time for Nigeria and the organizers of the NUGA games in particular to rethink and chart a better and achievable path to make institutional sports more rewarding, not only for the participants and their institution, but also for the local community, the nation and the world in general.

While stating that this would only be achieved if sport could be part of the program and that NUGA could be self-funding, more diverse, inclusive, competitive and goal-oriented, the don added that it would be a good approach to consider the NUGA, for example, not as a simple competition, but as an institution, a product, a brand, a company, a technological tool and a partner worthy of identifying and developing sports talents for the whole country.

Fasan, however, commended UNILAG for doing everything possible to mobilize support from the private and public sectors and also upgraded its sports facilities and equipment to international standards to make the NUGA Games interesting for the participants, saying that this was the practice in developed countries. and Nigeria had the potential to reach a similar height for greater impact.

According to him, the institution had thus succeeded in changing the narrative of NUGA by setting higher standards for future hosts of the competition.
