Mann shouldn’t meddle in city business: BJP

The Chandigarh Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday questioned the alleged “interference of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in the functioning of Chandigarh”.

The BJP statement came after Chandigarh PAA councilors said Mann assured them (PAA councilors) to have a meeting with City Commissioner (Punjab cadre officer) Anindita Mitra and a meeting with Chandigarh administration officials when they complained to him that their development work was not being done and the officers were not listening to them. AAP advisers told Mann that their agenda items had not been presented to the House and that the officers had not listened to them. They had even made reference to the Municipal Commissioner who is a senior Punjab officer.

The city’s BJP leader, Arun Sood, said “the AAP wants to control Chandigarh from Punjab and the CM’s interference in the administration of Chandigarh will not be tolerated.”

“It’s petty politics that the AAP does. Bhagwant Mann’s interference in the administration of Chandigarh will not be tolerated under any circumstances. It has become clear that the Aam Aadmi party wants to control Chandigarh from Punjab. The Chief Minister of Punjab has no right to interfere in the affairs of the Chandigarh administration. Anandita Mitra (City Commissioner) and other officers who came to Chandigarh from Punjab are all administrative officers at civil service level and as long as they are deputies in the administration of Chandigarh, their responsibility lies with the administrator of Chandigarh or to the administration and not to the Government of Punjab. Who is Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to interfere in the functioning of the Chandigarh administration? Sood said, adding that “Aam Aadmi Party wants direct intervention of the Punjab government in Chandigarh and wants to control Chandigarh from Punjab, which will not be accepted under any circumstances.” He added what right Bhagwant Mann has while assuring councilors that he will speak to officers including the City Commissioner as AAP councilors said. “Do they want to run Chandigarh with a remote control like their government is run by remote control in Delhi? The Aam Aadmi party is pressuring Chandigarh officials,” Sood said.

Mayor Sarabjit Kaur said that not a single development agenda item brought by the PAA has been stopped at the Municipal Corporation. “Never has it happened that an item on the agenda of the PAA advisers has been blocked by us. Every time we bring the agendas, the AAP and Congress try to throw them out. They only want to do politics,” she said.

Sood reiterated that the BJP’s position has always been that Chandigarh should remain a UT and should not be part of Punjab or Haryana. “The way Haryana doesn’t interfere in Chandigarh’s work, neither should Punjab,” he said.

It was only on Wednesday that Chandigarh AAP got another co-manager who is Mohali AAP MLA Kulwant Singh. He was appointed while Pardeep Chhabra was co-responsible for AAP in Chandigarh. Kulwant also accompanied the advisers to meet with Mann.
