Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho underwent a body transformation on loan at Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have become an unstoppable force in the 2019/20 campaign.

There was a negative atmosphere at the Allianz Arena as recently as November 2019, when the ax was brought down on Niko Kovac after a shocking 5-1 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt.

But from the moment Hansi Flick stepped into the technical realm, the Bavarians unleashed their potential as one of Europe’s top millennia teams with astonishing treble play.

Bayern’s superb 2019/20

They toppled Borussia Dortmund to win the Bundesliga and defeat Bayer Leverkusen to win the DFB-Pokal final, but it was in the Champions League that they shone the most.

Bayern got ‘Big Ears’ for the sixth time in their history with an astonishing streak that included seven goals against Chelsea and Tottenham as well as an 8-2 loss to Barcelona.

The most remarkable quarter-final result of all, saw then-lender Philippe Coutinho end the Lisbon rout with two goals against the very club that sent him to the Bundesliga.

Coutinho returns to Barcelona

It’s fair to say that the Brazilian’s loan spell has been plentiful securing the treble, so much so, in fact, that new Barca boss Ronald Koeman has assured he will stay at Camp Nou for 2020/21.

It’s still early days, but Coutinho already looks twice like the player who failed to live up to his € 160million in transfer fees in his first 18 months after bidding Liverpool farewell.

So what has changed? Well, aside from soaking up Bayern’s confidence and class during their year there, it’s clear that the physical diet undertaken in Bavaria has rubbed off on Coutinho as well.

Coutinho’s body transformation

You’ve probably seen footage over the past few months showing the crazy body transformations performed by players like Robert Lewandowski and Leon Goretzka during training with Bayern.

It is clear that the club have a strategy to pump up their players and it only took a season for this to envelop Coutinho with images showing how his physique changed before and after his loan spell at Bayern.

Check out some of the photographs below to see Coutinho’s muscular new frame as well as workout footage from Instagram that gives us a potential glimpse into his new routine.

Confirmed increase in muscle mass

Is it just the photography? Is it just the light thing?

Well, no, because Brazil manager Tite told Spanish newspaper Marca that Coutinho had indeed gained weight during his year away from Barcelona.

“There is one factor you have to keep in mind; Coutinho is a very dedicated player physically,” he explained in October.

“This is even more true after his time at Bayern Munich, where he gained five kilos of body weight, including four kilos (9 pounds) of muscle mass. He has improved a lot physically.”

Now, naturally, it takes more than a few bicep curls to go from a Barca flop to one of the club’s best players, but Bayern’s physical work with Coutinho has surely helped that.

Also, it’s clearly worth packing the team into the gym considering how dominant Bayern was last season and maybe a few clubs could pull a leaf out of their pound.

Barca fans will just have to keep their fingers crossed that Coutinho does not return to his leaner figure a few months after his return to Catalonia.
