Alstom wins 876 million euro contract with the National Tunnel Authority for the modernization of line 1 in Cairo

A state-of-the-art metro, the Metropolis brings an unprecedented level of comfort to residents and tourists of Cairo. Its interior layout is tailored to specific customer needs and designed to maximize train capacity while improving comfort, accessibility and passenger flow. It has wide corridors and a space reserved for women. During peak hours, each train will be able to carry 2,580 passengers and its eco-design provides increased energy efficiency and is recyclable up to 98%. In addition, Alstom’s proposal includes a unique design reflecting the history and culture of Cairo.

Integrated digital solutions provide real-time passenger information, dynamic route maps, video displays and video surveillance. Also included is Alstom’s state-of-the-art condition and predictive maintenance program, known as HealthHub. With improved data collection, the system optimizes life cycle costs and saves up to 20% in preventive maintenance labor and 15% in material consumption. Maintenance work will be carried out at the Cairo depot and managed locally, creating long-term employment opportunities for local talent. A training and development plan will be deployed in partnership with the Egyptian Company for Metros (ECM) – the operator and maintainer of line 1.

The Metropolis metro will be manufactured at Alstom’s plant in Valenciennes, France. Over 6,000 Metropolis cars have been sold around the world, including cities like Barcelona, Amsterdam, Mumbai, Chennai, Montreal, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Lima and Santiago de Chile.

Alstom has been a partner of Egyptian railways since 1971, supporting the development of rail infrastructure in the country. Alstom Egypt has set up a strong local team and a center of excellence (COE) for signaling systems, power supply and maintenance workshops to support projects in its Africa-Middle East-Central Asia region (AMECA). The Egyptian vision and its solid pool of talents have enabled Alstom to make a significant contribution to the development of the Egyptian railway industry. Today, Alstom employs around 500 people in Egypt with several projects underway, including a consortium to design, implement, operate and maintain two new monorail lines connecting the new capital and the city of October 6 to Greater Cairo.
