Swaziland Country visit

The Champions visited the Kingdom of Swaziland from May 18-20 at the invitation of His Majesty King Mswati III on a regional mission to share experiences and encourage leadership to renew and revitalize the response to the HIV epidemic.

They met with the King, the Queen Mother and the Prime Minister, among others, to urge that traditional leaders be more directly involved in HIV prevention initiatives in their communities.

SouthAfrica Country visit

The Champions visited South Africa from March 4-5, 2010, as part of a regional mission to share experiences, endorse South Africa’s successes and encourage stronger leadership in the response to the HIV epidemic.

They also paid a courtesy visit on the Zulu Monarch, King Zwelithini, to endorse his brave decision to revive the practice of medical male circumcision within the Zulu Nation, South Africa’s largest tribe.

 

Namibia Country visit

The Champions for an HIV-Free Generation visited Namibia from June 14-17, 2009, on a regional mission to share experiences and encourage leadership to renew and revitalize the response to the HIV epidemic.

 

Mozambique

The Champions met with Mozambique President Armando Guebuza and other key leaders during their first country visit in February. The Champions called for scaling up HIV prevention strategies like male circumcision and responding to multiple partnerships as a way to arrest the spread of new HIV infections. International Conferences

ICASA

Prof. Miriam Were and Ms. Liya Kebede called on African leaders to live up to commitments on HIV and AIDS at the 15th International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA) in Dakar, Senegal. Read more about Conferences...

WHO Regional Committee for Africa

His Excellency, Mr. Festus Mogae, delivered the keynote address at the 59th Session of the WHO’s Regional Committee for Africa in Kigali, Rwanda from 31st August to 4th September. During the meeting, a resolution calling for intensified action for HIV prevention in Africa was adopted.

This resolution makes special mention of the Champions for an HIV-Free Generation, urging member states to be mindful of the critical roles of leadership and governance and to “support the initiatives of the Champions for an HIV-free Generation…”

Inauguration

In September 2008, the Champions gathered for the first time in Gaborone, Botswana to discuss, debate and come to a consensus on its overall mission, key principles, priorities and way forward in hopes of becoming an effective tool in the fight against the AIDS scourge.
